Adult Field Course: NC Bird Atlas

May 13, 2023 @ 8:15 am - 2:00 pm

The N.C. Bird Atlas (NCBA) is a five-year statewide community science project that will harness the power of thousands of volunteer birdwatchers to map the distribution and abundance of birds from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks. These observations will give researchers a comprehensive picture of bird populations across North Carolina.
During this course, you will learn the basics of the NCBA in a classroom setting and then head outside to explore the area and put your newly learned atlas skills to use to observe birds in the area.
Instructors include Lee Sherrill and Andrew Rapp. Sherrill is the Mountain Region Science Support Specialist for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC).  He is currently focusing his efforts on the N.C. Bird Atlas as the mountain ecoregion coordinator. Rapp is currently an N.C. Bird Atlas technician working in the N.C. mountain ecoregion.
The course is part of Grandfather Mountain’s Adult Field Course series, which offers participants the chance to explore the mountain like never before. Students examine specific aspects of the park ecosystem through fun, hands-on field excursions. Course leaders are experts in their fields and include professors, naturalists, scientists and acclaimed photographers, writers, historians and artists.
Cost is $60 per person (or $51 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club program), with registration required in advance. Click here to register.
