Adult Field Course: Introduction to Backpacking

For thousands of years, people have been drawn to explore Grandfather Mountain. The rugged terrain, unique ecosystems, extreme weather and breathtaking views have enticed countless explorers. Experience the wonders of Grandfather Mountain during the day and night by backpack camping overnight at one of the mountain’s primitive backcountry campsites. Participants will gain experience in planning a trip, using backpacking gear, and developing backcountry hard skills.

Participants will camp at the Calloway Gap campsite in Grandfather Mountain State Park. The Grandfather Trail to access the campsite is considered a very difficult trail, so hiking experience is required. Prior backpacking experience is not required, but participants will need to provide all of their own equipment for this field course.

Instructor Eric Payne is assistant director of outdoor adventure at East Tennessee State University where he manages the campus recreation outdoor program. He has worked in the outdoor industry for more than a decade.

The event is part of Grandfather Mountain’s Adult Field Course series, which offers participants the chance to explore the mountain like never before. Students examine specific aspects of the park ecosystem through fun, hands-on field excursions. The course leaders are experts in their fields and include professors, naturalists, scientists and acclaimed photographers, writers, historians and artists.
